| Rabindranath Thakur wrote this poem in Bengali in 1910 when, of course, India
was undivided. Hence, the reference to Sind which now is a part of Pakistan.
This poem is included in Rabindranath's book "Geetanjali" which was translated to English and called, in literal translation, "Song Offerings". Rabindranath received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for this book. Incidentally, Rabindranath holds the unique distinction of being the author of the National Anthems of two nations. Besides India's "Jano Gano Mano" he also wrote "Aamaar Shonaar Baanglaa", the National Anthem of Bangladesh. Of course, he wrote that song, too, for undivided, pre-1947, Bengal and it was adopted by Bangladesh as their Anthem in 1971. The English translation below has been adapted from one posted by Sitansu Sekhar Mittra many years ago. |
